Start from an example
The three above are what Reddit DMs are genuinely for: buying something off a stranger sensibly, a mod explaining a removal, and finding the one person who knows the obscure thing.
Set the handle
Type the username — the u/ is added for you. It is the detail that makes the screenshot Reddit rather than any orange messenger, so it is worth checking it appears in the header.
Write the messages
Set who sent each one and when. In a group, the sender's handle and the time appear inline above their message.
Write it like strangers
Reddit DMs are mostly people being useful to each other rather than friends chatting. Getting the register right does as much as any pixel here.

How the Reddit interface is put together
Our Reddit skin is rebuilt from the real interface in code rather than traced from a screenshot, so the details that make it recognisable survive at export resolution. Here is what those details actually are.
Everyone is u/something
The header, the sender labels, the empty state — all of them carry the u/ prefix, and a Reddit chat screenshot without it reads as a generic messenger with an orange bubble. It is also normalised as you edit, so you cannot end up with “u/u/lensrat”, which is exactly the sort of thing that survives into a published mockup.
Chat orange, not logo orange
Reddit's chat uses a deeper orange-red than the old logo colour everyone reaches for. It is a small shift and it matters, because the bright logo orange in a bubble reads as a brand asset rather than an interface.
Large, even corners with no tails
20px on both sides, no pointer anywhere. Reddit's chat is deliberately plain — there is very little chrome to hang an impression on, which is why the naming conventions carry so much of the identification.
Username and time sit inline above the message
In a thread, the sender's name appears in small grey next to the time, above their message. LINE puts the time outside the bubble; Reddit puts both inline in a header line. Same information, a completely different rhythm.
No read receipts
Reddit chat does not show them, so none are drawn even if the document carries one. Another platform where the accurate thing is an absence rather than a feature.
The culture is half the realism
Reddit DMs are mostly strangers being useful to each other — a trade, a mod explaining a removal, someone who happens to know the exact obscure thing. The examples above are written that way, because a Reddit mockup phrased like a group of friends reads as the wrong app.

Questions about Reddit mockups
- Do I need to type the u/ myself?
- No. Type the username and the prefix is added, and if you type it yourself it is not doubled. That normalisation exists because “u/u/name” is the kind of mistake that gets published.
- Why can't I add read receipts?
- Reddit chat does not have them, so the skin ignores the field rather than drawing a state the platform has never shown.
- Can I make a group chat?
- Yes. Turn on Group, name the thread and add the people who speak in the People section. Each gets their own colour, and their u/ handle appears above their messages.
- Can I mock up a message from the mod team?
- Yes — the example above does, using an invented subreddit. Writing a removal explained properly rather than as a wall of rules is genuinely useful for community-management material.
- Can I fake a message from a real redditor or subreddit?
- No, and our terms prohibit it. Attributing an invented message to a real account or a real subreddit's mod team is impersonation, and a fabricated mod message can cause real trouble for the people who actually run that community. Every example here uses invented handles.
- Is this the old Reddit chat or the new one?
- The current mobile chat — deeper orange, large even corners, inline username and time. The old design used the brighter logo orange, which is what most mockups still copy.
- Can I export a long thread?
- Yes. The download dialog offers the whole conversation at its true height, exactly one screen, or fit-to-content, so nothing is cropped at the fold.
- Is there a watermark?
- Free downloads carry a small SIMULATED · socialmock.com label, burned into the pixels, at 1× resolution. Pro removes the label and unlocks 2× and 3×. You can also switch the label on yourself at any tier, which is worth doing if a viewer might take the image at face value.
